A Service Call That Revealed a Bigger Problem
Our team recently assisted a food processing facility that requested replacement of condensers and evaporators inside a walk-in storage box. The unit included a monitoring system that triggered an alarm if temperatures exceeded 50 degrees.
While performing the equipment replacement, our technicians also identified deteriorating insulated panels inside the walk-in box. We recommended repairing those sections to prevent additional strain on the refrigeration system.
After the new refrigeration components were installed, the alarm stopped sounding and the system appeared to be running normally. However, the unit soon began shutting down intermittently, prompting another service visit.
The Importance of Building Envelope Integrity
During the follow-up inspection, we found that the insulation repairs had not been completed. Infrared temperature readings revealed areas in the walls and ceiling where insulation had degraded, allowing cold air to escape.
These insulation gaps forced the refrigeration equipment to work harder than designed to maintain internal temperatures. Over time, this additional load contributed to system shutdowns.
While monitoring systems are useful for identifying temperature changes, they often cannot pinpoint structural or environmental issues that affect equipment performance.
